This is a great book for anyone who is looking to get into the early education field but also for parents. It explores how kids learn and how early education shapes them. This book helped me pass the Praxis

  2. …with the renewed emphasis on infant and toddler caregiving, this text might become obsolete.

It remains relatively unchanged since the fourth edition. That’s good and bad.

It’s good because an instructor picking this new edition will not need to re-orient himself with the text’s format, organization, and layout. Chapter 6 is still about play while Chapters 9-10 cover langauge and literacy. Even the text itself has not changed that much with the exception of an updated idea or two.

It’s bad because, again, an instructor familiar with the text (like me) can’t help but think “Hey! Is Dr. Brewer doing anything to update this book?”. Don’t get me wrong: it’s the best book in the field for preschool to primary education, in my opinion. Babies and 2’s, though, are the latest focus on a many state early childhood agendas (or would-be agendas). I hope Dr. Brewer updates her book on this topic.

I’m quite curious to see how the next version will turn out.
