I recently purchased all the Month-to-Month Guides for the teachers at my school. The series is an excellent support for teachers struggling to let go of a text book series but afraid to throw the baby out with the bath water. This series not only provides guidance in what to teach and when, it explains the math itself so the teachers have a better understanding of what they’re teaching and its importance. I think the series makes a great transitional crutch while teachers develop the confidence to design a math program that meets our students needs. Vicki Bachman’s First-Grade Math is the most clearly written of the four books in the series. She’s a more conceptual thinker and discusses the enduring understandings students should come to as they practice mathematics. All four books describe the why and how-to as well as how to connect math to everyday life for the children. When you read these books, you can imagine yourself elbow to elbow with your students as they manipulate objects and draw pictures to find solutions. It’s like reading a recipe you know will just turn out to be delicious. My fifth grade teachers were very hurt that they didn’t get a Month-to-Month Guide also, so I hope one will be available soon!

  2. Finally a book that reveals a logical progression for primary math instruction!!! This is helping me plan for the school year with a very confusing math curriculum (Everyday Math). Making the “spiraling curriculum” explicit helps!!!

  3. After attending the Marilyn Burns Math Solutions Workshop, I had a new vision about how we should teach mathematics to our students. As a first year teacher, I found this book VERY helpful to help me implement hands-on mathematics instruction. It is a wonderful starting point. I would strongly suggest this book to 1st grade teachers!
